The Current State of BESS in Vietnam As of 2024, Vietnam has practically no BESS installed. So far, only private renewable power projects have trialed BESS development, there is nothing at the utility scale. The largest electricity storage project in Vietnam is the Bac Ai Pumped Storage Hydropower Project.
Battery technology Lithium-ion batteries are the dominant type of rechargeable batteries used for BESS projects, including those currently in operation in Vietnam.
Household BESS installations are typically in the range of 3-20 kWh. As an example, in the USA a 13.5 kWh Tesla Powerwall costs $11 500 with installation. These systems enhance self-consumption by storing surplus solar energy generated during the day for use at night or during cloudy periods.
Standalone BESS projects operate independently from generation sources and are used for grid services or back-up. Hybrid BESS projects are co-located with solar and wind projects and store excess generation for later use or to export power to the grid.
