How to store solar energy on farms | NenPower
Effective solar energy storage strategies include: a) Utilizing battery storage systems for excess energy, b) Implementing thermal
Enacting local, state, and federal policies that ensure the U.S. solar buildout strengthens farm viability and keeps land in farming will be critical to reducing land use and siting tensions and getting renewable energy projects built. AFT developed policy recommendations to meet these goals and advance Smart Solar℠ principles.
If solar energy is developed on farmland or ranchland, policies and practices protect soil health, especially during construction and decommissioning, to ensure opportunities for farming in the future. Agriculture and solar energy can coexist if appropriate planning is undertaken.
Krisy Gashler is a writer for the College of Arts and Sciences. David Nutt contributed to this report. The process of combining agricultural production and solar panels on the same farmland, known as agrivoltaics, has seen a great leap in Cornell research activity.
Cornell graduate student Dana Russell plants strawberries at a commercial solar farm in Ravena, New York. It is one of the active agrivoltaic research projects – the idea of growing crops while harnessing the sun's energy – around the state.
