Sino-Thai EV battery plant starts operations
Focused on the import, assembly and distribution of battery modules and battery packs for energy storage systems and EVs, the plant
Thailand may lack the Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) necessary to navigate supply and demand challenges. The 2024 PDP draft included 10,000 MW of BESS, but this may see the country struggle to fulfil carbon neutrality and Net Zero commitments over the coming decades.
The move strengthens Thailand's EV and energy storage supply chain as the country pushes to become a regional manufacturing hub. China's leading lithium battery producer Sunwoda has received approval from Thailand's Board of Investment (BOI) for a THB 50 billion ($1.5 billion) investment in local battery manufacturing.
Under joint efforts, venture expected to give impetus to industry in SE Asia Thailand's first domestic electric vehicle battery pack production plant went into operation on Thursday. The plant, run jointly by Chinese battery cell manufacturer Gotion High-tech and Thai company Nuovo Plus, is expected to give Southeast Asia's EV industry a boost.
There are currently few grid-scale energy storage projects in Thailand, although the situation is likely to change. In furtherance of its commitments under the Paris Agreement, the Thai government has enacted policies which envisage renewable energy accounting for the majority of grid capacity and output by 2040.
