What is LDES? Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) is a technology that stores energy and then dispatches it as power, heat or cooling for extended periods of time, ranging from 8 hours to days, weeks or seasons. It takes various forms, including chemical, thermal, mechanical and electrochemical storage.
LDES technologies include but are not limited to, mechanical storage like CAES, thermal storage systems like molten salt storage used in CSP plants, and emerging chemical storage solutions like flow batteries and hydrogen storage . PHS currently makes up the vast majority of the world's energy storage capacity.
Short-Duration Energy Storage Needs: Applications that require energy storage for shorter durations (typically less than 4 hours) may not need LDES. Technologies like lithium-ion batteries are more suitable for these scenarios due to their high energy density and lower cost.
Figure 1 gives an overview of LDES technology and the technical challenges involved. LDES is defined as a technology capable of storing electricity for six hours or more. It allows electricity to be stored via the power grid for a certain period and then discharged in appropriate amounts according to demand, helping to balance supply and demand.
