Chile makes progress on energy storage with 20+ approved projects
With 23 energy storage projects already approved, totaling an impressive 3,000 MW of capacity, Chile is at the forefront of innovation and efficiency in Latin America.
With transmission lines at overcapacity and permitting delays slowing the development of new grid infrastructure, battery energy storage systems (BESS) have surged as a profitable alternative for Chilean power producers.
Since Chilean co-located storage assets don't require an Environmental Impact Statement (known locally as the DIA), development times for storage assets have been cut in half compared to solar or wind assets.
The $225 million Polpaico BESS Energy Storage System, from Jinko Power Chile II, has a nominal power capacity of 300 MW and would have a scheduled start date of Nov. 23, 2026, in the Til Til commune of Chacabuco province, also in Metropolitan.
